Kelsall, Cheshire: replacement dwelling and redevelopment of commercial stud farm

The brief

The client wanted their existing home and related commercial stud farm to be re-developed into a new principal dwelling, with new and improved stud buildings and a new groom’s cottage.

NWD's approach

We designed a new country house in a modern style that now sits in its own grounds, enjoying far-reaching views of the Cheshire countryside. Adjacent to the house, we worked closely with the client to redesign the equestrian centre to improve the facilities and access for horseboxes. The layout has been both rationalised and enhanced in order to improve the site management and security.

NWD developed the scheme based on a repeating detail of gables facing the road. This common theme runs through all three elements of the redevelopment and ties them together, creating a strong frontage from the adjacent road.

The project required phased demolition, which meant NWD Architects’ Technical Director, Matt Davenport, had to optimise the initial designs in order to facilitate this. It also meant extremely detailed pre-planning of each phase was called for. As the site is sloping, cut and fill was required to achieve the significant rebuilding required for the redevelopment.

The outcome

The new groom’s cottage and the main dwelling are complete and the new stud buildings are now up and running. Each of the three buildings is tailored to its purpose, while respecting the same language and making use of the same palette of materials. The result is a striking new home that is anchored by its relationship with the adjacent buildings.
