Sandbach, Cheshire: refurbishment of Town Hall
Our brief
Following our success with Sandbach Old Hall, the Town Council approached us with a view to refurbishing the old Town Hall in the centre of Sandbach. The building is a fine example of high Victorian Gothic Architecture, and was designed by the renowned architect Thomas Bower in 1889. The building is grade two listed and sits squarely within the conservation area.
NWD's approach
Our brief was to upgrade the existing facilities in a sensitive manner, conserving existing fabric and ensuring that additions are appropriate in terms of details, scale and materials.
The outcome
The brief called for the upgrading of the existing staircase, improvements to the existing visitor facilities, and most importantly the complete refurbishment of the existing great hall and mezzanine to provide two separate function rooms. An extensive lighting scheme was proposed to accentuate the stunning scissor truss roof structure that dominates the Great Hall.
